Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, has advised Muslim couples to exercise caution when seeking marriage advice from self-proclaimed counsellors on social media.

His remarks came during the wedding reception of Fahad Byansi, a manager at Hariss International Limited, and Fazira Tabaro Mikidad, held at Lwabitakuli Trading Centre in Sembabule District.

Mubaje expressed concerns about the superficial nature of advice offered by these social media counsellors, stressing that it often lacks spiritual depth.

"In most cases, these self-proclaimed marriage counsellors are individuals who have experienced their own marital failures, which has subsequently led to numerous relationship breakdowns," he remarked, eliciting laughter from the elegantly dressed attendees.

Drawing from Islamic teachings, Mubaje highlighted that marriage is an act of worship (Ibada) according to the Quran and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

He advised the newlyweds to share their phone PINs to build trust and suggested deleting contacts of past acquaintances to avoid misunderstandings.

"I assure you that I will continue providing you with guidance as you embark on this memorable journey together. I am honoured to have officiated your marriage vows in the presence of your parents, relatives, religious leaders, and the wider public," Mubaje promised.

The Mufti also took the opportunity to address broader societal issues. He requested Hanifa Kawooya Bagirana, the Woman Member of the National Parliament representing Sembabule, to convey his appreciation to President Museveni for his firm stance against LGBTQ issues in Uganda, despite recent threats from the British Parliament.

Furthermore, Mubaje underscored the importance of international marriages in fostering the spirit of the East African Federation and urged the Muslim community to utilize government funds through the Parish Development Model for poverty alleviation programs.

He also encouraged participation in the ongoing census exercise.

Mubaje’s insights at the wedding emphasized the need for meaningful, spiritually grounded marital advice and highlighted key social and political issues facing the Ugandan Muslim community.
